Lake Biograd: The heart of the untouched rainforest and the jewel of the Bjelasica mountain.
In the very heart of the Bjelasica mountain, surrounded by hundred-year-old trees and untouched nature, lies Lake Biograd — one of the most beautiful mountain sights in Montenegro. It is located at an altitude of 1,094 meters above sea level and is the central location of the “Biogradska gora” National Park.
Whether you are a fan of easy walks, photography, hiking or simply want to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, Lake Biograd offers peace and breathtaking views at any time of the year.What makes Lake Biograd special is that it is surrounded by one of the last three rainforests in Europe. The story of the protection of this area goes back to the distant year 1878, when after the liberation of Kolašin, this area was gifted to Prince Nikola Petrović. Since then, the area has been known as “Branik of Prince Nikola” and is under strict state protection.
The trees in the rainforest are over 400 to 500 years old, and some of them reach a height of up to 60 meters. Walking along the path around the lake means breathing the cleanest air and feeling the primal power of nature.
What to do and see at Lake Biograd? 1. Walk along the educational trail around the lake An easy, flat hiking trail with a length of about 3.4 kilometers has been arranged around the entire lake. The walk lasts about an hour and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Educational boards with information about the flora and fauna of this region, as well as wooden benches for rest, have been placed along the path.
2. Riding wooden boats One of the most beautiful experiences on the lake is renting traditional wooden rowboats. Driving through the calm, emerald-green water provides a whole new perspective on the rainforest and surrounding mountain peaks.
3. Hiking to viewpoints and hiking routes For lovers of adventure and hiking, numerous marked trails start from the lake leading to the peaks of Bjelasica: Bendovac (1,774 m): One of the most beautiful viewpoints in Montenegro, offering a panoramic view of the entire rainforest and lake. Chorine and Katun Vranjak: An opportunity to experience the traditional Katun way of life and try local specialties.
How to get to Biograd Lake?
The lake is located about 20 km from Kolašin and about 10 km from Mojkovac. From the main highway Kolašin-Mojkovac there is an asphalted road that leads directly to the lake itself and the parking area. The road is well marked with road signs.
