Ševarinsko Lake (also known as Ševarina) is one of the smallest
and most secluded mountain lakes on Mount Bjelasica. It is located in the northeastern part of the mountain (in the municipality of Berane), in the immediate vicinity of Veliko Šiško Lake (about 1.2 km southeast of it).
Key characteristics of the lake:
Elevation: Approximately 1,660 meters above sea level (at nearly the same elevation as Veliko Šiško Lake).
Origin and appearance: It is of glacial origin but is quite shallow. Much of the lake is overgrown with wetland vegetation and reeds—specifically the type known as *ševar* (sedge/bulrush), from which the lake derives its name.
Natural process: From a geological and hydrological perspective, Ševarinsko Lake is in the final stage of extinction (overgrowth) and is slowly transforming into a marsh or peat bog, making it a rare and unique natural ecosystem.
Usage: Local livestock-farming families from nearby summer pastures (*katuni*) traditionally use it as a watering hole for their livestock.
Surroundings and experience
Although not as appealing for swimming as some other “mountain eyes” (glacial lakes), it is a true gem for lovers of pristine nature, tranquility, and hiking.
Hiking trails: The lake is part of circular hiking routes that start at the Šiška summer pastures and connect the Šiška lakes with the Ursulovačko lakes. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to reach Ševarinsko Lake from Veliko Šiško Lake via an easy walk. Access: The Šiška area itself is reached via gravel roads from the direction of Berane (passing through the villages of Lubnice and Kurikuće).
