Pešića Lake is the second-largest glacial lake on Mount Bjelasica (ranking just behind Biogradsko Lake) and is considered by many to be the mountain's most beautiful "mountain eye." It is situated in a deep glacial cirque, nestled between Bjelasica’s two highest peaks—Crna Glava (2,139 m a.s.l.) and Zekova Glava (2,117 m a.s.l.).
Geographical and physical characteristics
Elevation: It lies at an altitude of 1,771 meters; consequently, throughout much of spring and early summer, snow from nearby slopes still reaches the lake's shore.
Dimensions and depth: It is approximately 290 meters long and 150 meters wide, with a maximum depth exceeding 8 meters (the average depth is around 3–4 meters).
Water and origin: It was formed by glacial activity (a glacial lake). The water is exceptionally clean and clear, ranging in color from dark green to deep blue; the lake is fed by underground springs, snowmelt, and small surface streams flowing into it.
Legend of its origin
A beautiful folk legend is associated with Pešića Lake. According to tradition, a winged horse lived in the lake, emerging from the water every night to fly over Mount Bjelasica. One night, a local herdsman—or hero—startled or outwitted the creature, causing it to retreat forever into the depths of the lake. Local folklore holds that, even today, on calm nights, one can hear the sound of neighing and the striking of hooves rising from the depths. Access and nearby attractions
Hiking and access: The easiest way to reach the lake is via hiking trails from the Bjelasica mountain pass or by descending from Zekova Glava (where the famous Vranjak *katun*—a traditional shepherd's settlement—is located). The ridge above the lake offers a fantastic viewpoint and an ideal spot for photography.
Setting: It is surrounded by lush grassy slopes and characteristic juniper scrub. Due to its location, it remains in the soft shadow of the surrounding peaks for much of the day, lending it a unique, mystical appearance.
Combined tours: It is often a key stop on hiking tours that include visits to the Ursulovačko Lakes, Šiško Lake, and the Crna Glava peak itself.
