The Meanders of the Ćehotina River (a site also known as the Gačevića Ulistro viewpoint or the Mataruge village meanders) represent one of the most picturesque and recognizable natural phenomena in the Municipality of Pljevlja and across northern Montenegro.
Formation and Geographical Characteristics
River and Reservoir: These distinctive meanders formed on the Ćehotina River in a section where its natural flow slowed and widened due to the creation of the Otilovići reservoir (built in 1982 to serve the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant and the city's water supply).
Serpentine Course: In this submerged section of the canyon, the water winds in pronounced horseshoe and "S" shapes around steep, forested, and rocky peninsulas, creating a scene reminiscent of the famous meanders of the Uvac River in Serbia.
Depth and Surroundings: In this area, the canyon is quite deep and carved into limestone rock, covered with low-growing vegetation as well as pine and oak forests.
Gačevića Ulistro Viewpoint
Primary Observation Point: The most beautiful and famous view of the meanders is found at the viewpoint located on the Gačević family estate (in the village of Mataruge). The viewpoint has been developed with a wooden gazebo, benches, and a safety railing. Photogenic Appeal: This vantage point offers a fantastic panoramic view of the Ćehotina River meanders from above, making the location immensely popular on social media and a signature image of the Pljevlja region.
Access and Activities
Access: The viewpoint is located approximately 20 kilometers from Pljevlja. It is reached via the road leading from Pljevlja toward Vrulja/Bijelo Polje (passing through Mataruge), from which a short gravel track branches off to the viewpoint itself. Access is relatively easy and does not require strenuous hiking.
Water Activities: In addition to enjoying the view from above, the Otilovići reservoir and the river meanders offer excellent conditions for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), small-boat cruising, and sport fishing (the lake is rich in huchen, chub, and trout).
The Ćehotina meanders are the perfect spot for a day trip and an escape into pristine nature while exploring northern Montenegro.
