Riblje Lake (Fish Lake) is one of the most recognizable glacial lakes on Durmitor, situated on the vast, rolling *Jezerska Površ* plateau, not far from Vražje Lake and the village of Njegovuđa.
Geographical and physical characteristics
Elevation: It is located at an altitude of approximately 1,409 meters.
Dimensions and depth: It ranks among the smaller and shallower Durmitor lakes. It is about 200 to 250 meters long, with an average depth of only 1.5 to 2 meters (reaching about 3 meters at peak water levels in the spring).
Water and appearance: Despite its shallowness, the lake's water is exceptionally clear. During the summer months, the shoreline becomes overgrown with lush marsh vegetation and reeds, giving the lake a distinctive yellowish-green hue.
Name and folklore
Abundance of fish: It was named for its former abundance of fish—primarily rainbow trout, brown trout, and chub.
Legend of giant fish: According to local folklore, the depths of Riblje Lake were inhabited by fish and aquatic monsters so massive that, as the stories go, they could swallow an entire horse or ox if the animal ventured to the shore to drink.
Cultural and historical significance of the area
In the immediate vicinity of Riblje Lake and Vražje Lake lie the "Greek cemeteries" (*Grčka groblja*)—sites featuring *stećci* (medieval tombstones) that are protected by UNESCO. This site lends a unique historical and mystical atmosphere to the entire area.
Access and Activities
Access: The lake is easily accessible, as it is located right next to the road leading from Žabljak towards Njegovuđa and the Tara Canyon.
Activities: It is a favorite stop for motorists and cyclists touring the Durmitor plateau, as well as for anglers and photographers. Thanks to the open landscape, flocks of sheep and horses can often be seen grazing freely around the lake, offering an authentic experience of mountain life.
