Vražje Jezero (Devil's Lake) is one of the most attractive and geologically interesting glacial lakes in the Durmitor region. It is situated on the expansive Jezerska Plateau, approximately 10 kilometers from Žabljak and in the immediate vicinity of Riblje Jezero (Fish Lake).
Geographical and physical characteristics
Elevation: It is located at an altitude of 1,419 meters.
Dimensions and depth: The lake is oval-shaped, measuring about 500 to 600 meters in length and around 200 meters in width, with a maximum depth of approximately 4 meters.
Distinctive water color: It is known for a fascinating visual contrast. Due to its depth and the composition of the lakebed, the water in the center appears a deep dark green to indigo-blue, while near the shore it is shallow and a pale yellow-green; this creates an impressive sight when viewed from nearby high ground.
Folk legends and lore
Its name—*Vražje* (Devil's)—is linked to several dark and mystical folk tales:
The red winged horse: According to the most famous legend, a devil (*vrag*) lived in the depths of the lake in the form of a red winged horse. At night, he would emerge from the water to mate with mares from the surrounding pastures. After mating, he would strike them in the belly with his hoof to prevent them from bearing offspring. However, one mare managed to escape and gave birth to the famous winged horse Jabučilo—the steed of Duke Momčilo from epic folk poetry. Mysterious currents: Local folklore held that the lake harbored dangerous whirlpools and depths capable of pulling in unwary swimmers and livestock, earning it a reputation as a cursed or "Devil's" place.
Nearby UNESCO Heritage
Just a few hundred meters from Vražje (Devil's) and Riblje (Fish) Lakes lies the "Greek Cemetery" (*Grčko groblje*), a site featuring medieval tombstones known as *stećci*. This site is under UNESCO protection and represents a cultural and historical asset of immense importance to the region.
Setting and Access
Access: It is located right next to the road leading from Žabljak toward Njegovuđa and Pljevlja. It is easily accessible by car, bicycle, or as part of a walk across the Jezerska Plateau.
Setting: Situated in an open area free of tall forest, the lake offers a clear, expansive view of the Durmitor massifs and surrounding pastures. In summer, it is a popular spot for photography, picnics, and even a refreshing dip for the bravest swimmers.
