Veliko Pošćensko Lake (often simply referred to as Pošćensko Lake) is located in the exceptionally attractive and picturesque village of Pošćenje, right at the entrance to the famous Nevidio Canyon and the Komarnica River gorge (Šavnik Municipality).
Geographical and physical characteristics
Elevation: It sits at an altitude of approximately 930 meters, making it one of the more accessible and lower-lying mountain lakes in the region.
Origin: The lake is of glacial origin, situated in a natural hollow surrounded by high cliffs and green meadows.
Dimensions and depth: It is about 180 to 200 meters long and 100 meters wide, with a maximum depth of approximately 3 to 4 meters.
Water: The lake water is clear and greenish in hue; it is fed by local springs and streams. During the summer months, the water warms up significantly compared to the high-altitude Durmitor lakes, making it pleasant for swimming.
Malo Pošćensko Lake and surroundings
Malo Pošćensko Lake is located in the immediate vicinity (just a hundred meters away). While the "Veliko" (Large) lake is more open and suitable for leisure, the "Malo" (Small) lake is densely overgrown with lush aquatic vegetation and reeds, giving it a distinct marshy character.
These two lakes, together with Nevidio Canyon, the Skakavica Waterfall, and the surrounding cliffs, make the village of Pošćenje one of the most beautiful and photogenic villages in Montenegro. Tourism Significance and Activities
Starting Point for Nevidio Canyon: The lake is renowned for its location right next to the entrance to Nevidio Canyon, serving as a primary meeting point and base for adventurers and visitors heading out for canyoning.
Activities: It is a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), as well as for walking along the well-maintained paths around the lake and for camping.
Access: Reaching the lake is very easy; it is situated right off the road connecting Šavnik and Žabljak (via the Ivica Tunnel), making it accessible to all types of vehicles throughout the season.
