Zminičko Lake (often referred to by the name of the nearby village, Zminica) is a beautiful, secluded glacial lake situated on the vast Sinjajevina/Njegovuđe plateau, near the towns of Žabljak and Šavnik.
Geographical and physical characteristics
Elevation: It lies at an altitude of approximately 1,285 meters, nestled at the foot of the forested slopes and hills of Sinjajevina.
Dimensions and depth: It measures about 230 meters in length and 120 meters in width, with a maximum depth of roughly 3 to 4 meters (depending on the season and snowmelt).
Water and flora: The lake's water is exceptionally clear and transparent. Its shores are largely overgrown with sedge, reeds, and water lilies, giving it a distinctive emerald-green appearance and making it a true haven for aquatic vegetation.
Endemic inhabitant – The Alpine Newt
In scientific circles, Zminičko Lake is renowned as a vital natural habitat for the Alpine newt (*Ichthyosaura alpestris*). Thanks to its clean water and unique microclimate, the lake offers ideal conditions for the preservation of this protected amphibian species.
Setting and surroundings
Forests and pastures: Unlike some of the barren lakes found in the Durmitor region, Zminičko Lake is surrounded by dense coniferous forests (spruce and pine) and lush meadows, creating a stunning contrast between the dark green forest and the water's reflection. Peace and Quiet: Situated away from Žabljak’s main thoroughfares and tourist routes, the lake has retained its profound silence and pristine natural setting. It is a favorite retreat for locals, anglers, and camping enthusiasts looking to escape the crowds.
Access
The lake is easily accessible via a route featuring both paved and gravel sections, leading from Njegovuđa and the village of Zminica (off the Žabljak–Pljevlja or Žabljak–Mojkovac roads). Vehicles can drive right up to the lake, and a well-maintained walking path encircles it, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll.
