The Church of Saint Elijah the Prophet in the village of Komarnica (Savnik municipality) is an important village shrine and assembly place for the inhabitants of the Drobnjak region.
Basic features and history:
Location: It is located in the picturesque village of Komarnica, located at the foot of the southern slopes of Durmitor and near the entrance to the famous Nevidio canyon, a few kilometers from Šavnik.
History: The church was built at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (around 1900) on the site of an older church, with the efforts and contributions of local brotherhoods and residents of the Drobnjak area.
Architecture: It was built in an authentic country style from beautifully carved stone. It is a single-nave building with a "horsetail" bell tower above the entrance and preserved by the village cemetery in its gate.
Sabor on Ilindan: It is dedicated to the Holy Prophet Elijah (Ilindan), which is celebrated on August 2. On that day, a large national assembly, liturgy and gathering of locals and displaced families from this region is traditionally held in Komarnica.
Affiliation: The church belongs to the Diocese of Budimljansko-Nikšić. In recent years, with the help of contributors and locals, it has been restored and maintained several times in order to preserve its original appearance and spiritual role.
