The Cathedral Church of the Holy Transfiguration in Žabljak is the central religious and historical building of this sub-Durmitor region.

Historical significance and origin: It was erected in 1862 as a sign of memory and gratitude for the victory of the Montenegrins and Herzegovina over the Ottoman Empire in the Battle of Saranci. The construction of this church also marks the very beginning of the emergence of today's Žabljak as an urban settlement.
The only surviving old building: Žabljak was burned and destroyed almost to the ground during the Balkan Wars and the First and Second World Wars. The Church of the Holy Transfiguration is the only building from that early period that managed to avoid complete destruction and survive the ravages of war.
Architecture: It was built in the traditional style of mountain stone temples. It is a one-nave building with a brick belfry "on a horseshoe" above the entrance door.
Town celebration: The Feast of the Transfiguration (celebrated on August 19) is also the official celebration of the municipality of Žabljak, so on that day a large number of locals and visitors traditionally gather around the church.
