The Church of St. Sava in the village of Duži (Savnik municipality) is one of the most important sanctuaries and historical centers of the Drobnjak region.
Basic features and history:
Location: It is located in the village of Duži, located on a plateau above the canyon of the Bukovica and Komarnica rivers, not far from Šavnik towards Žabljak.
Monastery complex and history: The church is part of the Duži Monastery (which should not be confused with the famous monastery of the same name near Trebinje). The original church and monastery on this site were built at the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century. Throughout history, the monastery was an extremely important spiritual, educational and uprising center of Drobnjak.
Suffering and renovations: The church was demolished, burned and rebuilt several times during the conflict with the Ottoman Empire, since it served as a meeting place for the leaders of Drobnjak and insurgents. The present appearance of the temple is the result of renovations from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Architecture: It was built in the spirit of traditional sacral architecture of hewn stone. It is a single-nave building with a dome and bell tower, in the middle of a spacious and beautifully decorated monastery gate surrounded by nature.
Spiritual significance: It is dedicated to Saint Sava, and it belongs to the Diocese of Budimljansko-Nikšić. It is a place of regular gathering of believers and inhabitants of Drobnjak villages, especially on the feast of St. Sava and during the summer assemblies.
