The Church of the Holy Great Martyr Prokopija in the village of Lepenac (near Mojkovac) is one of the most important village shrines in that part of the Tara river valley.
Basic features and history:
Location: It is located in the village of Lepenac, a few kilometers northeast of Mojkovac, in the immediate vicinity of the main road leading to Bijelo Polje.
History and restoration: There was an old church in that place, which was demolished by the Ottomans. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (around 1906, at the time of Prince Nikola), the inhabitants of Lepenc and the surrounding villages built the present temple on the foundation of the old church.
Architecture: It was built in the traditional Montenegrin-Herzegovinian style of hewn stone. It is a one-nave building with a "horsetail" bell tower above the entrance door. It is surrounded by the village cemetery where the inhabitants of Lepenc are buried.
Assembly and tradition: The temple is dedicated to Saint Procopius, who is celebrated on July 21. On that day, a large national assembly and liturgy is traditionally held in Lepenac, where locals, believers and people who have their origins in this region gather.
Affiliation: The church belongs to the Diocese of Budimljansko-Nikšić. With the help of locals and contributors, the church and its plateau have been additionally arranged and renovated in the past years.
