The Church of Saint Nicholas in the Old Town of Kotor is the most important and largest Orthodox church in Kotor. It is located in the northern part of the Old Town, on St. Luke's Square.
Basic features and history:
Construction and architecture: Construction of the church began in 1902 on the foundations of an older Dominican monastery church from the 15th century and a burned down Orthodox temple, and it was consecrated in 1909. It was designed in the Serbian-Byzantine style with two impressive bell towers on the western facade.
Interior and iconostasis: The interior of the church is decorated with an imposing wooden iconostasis made in 1908, while the icons were painted by the famous Czech painter František Ziegler.
Treasury and valuables: The temple has a rich collection of icons, old church books, works of art, liturgical objects and priests' robes with gold and silver embroidery.
Live religious life: The church is open daily for visitors and believers and is known for its rich church singing and the long tradition of the Orthodox municipality in Kotor.
