The Church of Saint Thekla (Church of the Holy First Martyr Thekla) in Danilovgrad is one of the most important and oldest shrines in the municipality of Danilovgrad.
Basic features and history:
Location: It is located on a hill in the city itself, not far from the center of Danilovgrad and the city cemetery.
Age and origin: On the site of today's temple, there was an old, medieval church that was demolished and rebuilt several times. The temple got its present appearance in the 19th century (in the middle and end of the 19th century, during the reign of Prince Danilo and Prince Nikola).
Common heritage: One of the greatest peculiarities of this church throughout history was its specific role for all residents of Bjelopavlić. In certain periods and phases of reconstruction, it also served as a gathering place for the Orthodox and Catholic population of this region, which represents a rare example of religious tolerance and togetherness.
Architecture: It was built in the spirit of traditional Montenegrin sacral architecture of hewn stone. It is a single-nave building with a bell tower "on a horsehair" and a decorated gate with an old cemetery where many famous figures from the history of Bjelopavlić rest.
Holiday and city glory: It is dedicated to Saint Tekli (which is celebrated on October 7). This saint is especially respected by the people of Danilovgrad and Bjelopavlić, and her holiday is closely related to the Municipal Day itself and the historical liberation of this region.
Affiliation: The church belongs to the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral and is a regular place of worship and spiritual life for the residents of Danilovgrad.
