The Cathedral of the Holy Serbian Patriarch Makarij Sokolović in Plužine is a newly built cathedral of the Eparchy of Buda and Nikšić and represents the main spiritual center of Piva. Unique dedication: It is one of the first temples in the Serbian Orthodox Church dedicated to Patriarch Makari Sokolović. Patriarch Makarije was the restorer of the Patriarchate of Peć in 1557, and he was born in Piva (brother or close relative of the first founder of the famous Piva Monastery, Metropolitan Savatij Sokolović). Construction and consecration: The foundations of the crypt of the temple were consecrated at the end of October 2016, and the foundation stone for the church itself was laid on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 2017. Architecture and features: The temple is located in the very center of Plužine, on a plot of over 4,000 m². It was built in a combination of traditional church architecture and specific elements — gilded crosses and dome structures are the work of masters of Russian origin. Significance for the municipality: Plužine, as a municipal center created by the relocation of settlements due to the construction of the hydroelectric power plant and the Piva Lake, did not have a central city temple for decades, so the construction of this shrine had great spiritual and religious significance for the locals. The temple's glory: The temple's glory is celebrated in September, on the feast of the Holy Patriarch Makarij Sokolović, when a solemn liturgy is served and the people of the entire Piva region gather.
