The Church of St. John the Baptist in Plužine (also known as the church on Zabrđ) is the city's main shrine and the spiritual center of Piva.
Basic features and history:
Location: It is located in the city center of Plužina, on an elevation above Piva Lake, in a quiet environment with a beautiful view of the city and the lake.
Construction and consecration: The construction of the temple began at the end of the 20th century on the initiative and with the contributions of the residents of Piva, businessmen and displaced Piv residents. The church was ceremonially consecrated in 2008, giving Plužine its modern cathedral.
Architecture: It was built in the spirit of traditional sacral architecture of hewn stone. It is a harmonious single-nave building with a dome and bell tower above the entrance portal, which aesthetically fits perfectly into the mountainous landscape of Piva.
Interior: The interior of the church is decorated with a beautifully crafted iconostasis and fresco painting depicting motifs from the Old and New Testaments, as well as saints from Serbian and Orthodox history.
Holiday and glory: The temple is dedicated to the Birth of St. John the Baptist (Midsummer Day - July 7), when a solemn liturgy and a national assembly are held in Plužine, where the residents of the entire Piva region gather. The Assembly of Saint John (January 20) is also solemnly celebrated.
Affiliation: The church belongs to the Diocese of Budimljansko-Nikšić.
