The Church of St. Great Martyr Demetrius in Podgorica (also known as the church on Kruševac) is an extremely significant architectural monument and spiritual center located within the Petrović palace complex.
Basic features and history:
Location: It is located in Kruševac Park (Petrović Castle) in Podgorica, not far from the Castle building and the former residence of the Petrović-Njegoš royal dynasty.
History and construction: The church was built at the end of the 19th century (approximately at the same time as the castle itself, around 1890) as the court chapel of the vice-duke/prince Mirko Petrović-Njegoš (son of King Nikola).
Architecture: It was built in the spirit of traditional sacral architecture from beautifully carved stone. It is a smaller, elegant one-nave building with a belfry "on a horsetail" above the entrance portal and harmonious proportions that fit perfectly into the park setting of the complex.
Iconostasis and interior: The interior of the temple is decorated with a distinctive iconostasis, and the church itself has been renovated several times throughout history in order to preserve its original splendor.
Holiday and celebration: It is dedicated to Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr (Mitrovdan), which is celebrated on November 8. On this holiday, a solemn liturgy is served and a large number of believers gather.
Affiliation and role: The temple belongs to the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral. Due to its specific and quiet location within the park in Kruševac, it is a favorite place for religious services, baptisms and weddings of the residents of Podgorica.
