Brezojevica is one of the oldest, most famous and largest settlements in the municipality of Plav, located in the immediate vicinity of the entrance to the city, in the northeast of Montenegro.
Historical and cultural significance
The village has an extremely rich history and is one of the key cultural and spiritual centers of upper Polimlje:
Brezojevica Monastery (St. Luke): In the village there is an ancient monastery dedicated to the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke. It is believed that the monastery dates back to the 13th century (the era of Nemanjić) and throughout the centuries it was the spiritual and gathering center of the Orthodox population of this region, as well as the place where folk assemblies were held.
Historical crossroads: Due to its position, Brezojevica was a strategic point and meeting place of the Vasojević tribe and the Plav-Gusinj basin throughout the centuries.
Geographical position and nature
Location: The village is located at the very exit of the Lim River from Lake Plav, at the foot of the Visitor mountain massif.
Natural beauty: Geographically, it is extremely attractive because it is located in the immediate vicinity of the Plav lake, the Lim river and the Lim bridge, surrounded by lush Visitor forests and spacious flat areas suitable for living.
Traffic and modern life
The main intersection: Brezojevica is the key traffic junction of the Plav region — the roads leading from the direction of Andrijevica and Beran to Plav and Gusinje intersect here, as well as the road direction to Murin and Čakor (towards Kosovo).
Demography and economy: Unlike many remote mountain villages, Brezojevica has maintained a stable number of inhabitants due to its close proximity to Plav. The population is engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, trade, and more recently also catering and rural tourism (fishing on Lima, hiking on Visitor).
