Lješnica is one of the most famous and largest settlements in the municipality of Bijelo Polje, which stretches along the Lješnica river of the same name, from the very entrance to the town towards the slopes of the Bjelasica mountain.
Geography and location
Suburban settlement: Due to its direct proximity to the city center, Lješnica is functionally considered a suburban settlement of Bijelo Polje today.
Lješnica River: The Lješnica River flows through the village, a left tributary of the Lim, which rises at the foot of Bjelasica. The canyon and the upper reaches of this river are known for their clean nature and popular picnic spots.
Historical and cultural significance
Old monuments: In the upper part of Lješnica (Lješanska nahija/area) there are archaeological remains and old cemeteries, which indicate the early settlement of this area.
Architectural heritage: In this settlement there are also several recognizable cultural-historical and religious buildings that bear witness to the centuries-old coexistence of different confessions in the Bjelopolje area.
Life, infrastructure and tourism
Demographics: Unlike remote rural areas in the north, Lješnica has a stable population and a much younger population, precisely because of the proximity of schools, hospitals and workplaces in Bijelo Polje.
Recreation and Bjelasica: Lješnica serves as one of the key gateways and starting points for hikers, mountaineers and hunters who head towards the Bjelasica mountain and its peaks from the direction of the city (such as Turjak and Bjelasica).
