Conflict in 1916: On January 6 and 7, 1916, the fiercest battles took place on Bojna Njiva between the First Sandžak Division of the Army of the Kingdom of Montenegro (under the command of Serdar Janko Vukotić) and the much larger and better equipped Austro-Hungarian army.
Hand-to-hand: Fighting in this position was fought in harsh winter conditions, in deep snow and extremely low temperatures, often hand-to-hand and charging with bayonets.
Goal and outcome: The task of the Montenegrin army was to keep the Austro-Hungarian forces in this direction at all costs in order to enable the safe retreat of the Serbian army through Albania. The Montenegrins managed to defend and regain their positions on the Battle Field, achieving a tactical victory.
