Lukavica is a beautiful plateau and mountain area in the geographical heart of Montenegro, located northeast of Nikšić (about 35-40 km distance). It belongs to the wider massif of the Morački mountains and is considered one of the most attractive and picturesque areas in the country. Here is what makes Lukavica special and what it offers: 1. Recognizable peaks: Mali and Veliki Žurim The most striking visual symbol of Lukavica are two rocky peaks that rise sharply from spacious green meadows: Veliki Žurim (2,036 masl): An imposing peak whose ascent is relatively gentle and accessible, and from the top there is a great view of the entire plateau, Bjelasica, Komove and Durmitor. Mali Žurim (1,962 masl): Slightly lower, but much steeper and pyramidal in shape. The ascent to Mali Žurim is attractive and requires a little more caution at the very top. 2. Gorska oka: Kapetanovo and Manito lakes In the immediate vicinity of Lukavica there are two exceptional glacial lakes: Kapetanovo jezero (1,678 masl): It is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in Montenegro. It is located in a rocky environment, with a depth of up to 37 meters, and was named after the Turkish captain Mušović. Around the lake there are katuns and catering houses where visitors can try local food. Manito (Brnjičko) lake: It is located about 40 minutes' walk above the Captain's lake, it is smaller, more hidden and ideal for lovers of untouched silence. 3. Landscape, springs and katuniNature and water: Lukavica is known for its spacious pastures, lush vegetation and an exceptional wealth of sources of drinking water (according to folklore, there are "365 springs" in Lukavica - for every day of the year). The most famous plateau is Bare Bojovića. Traditional katuns: This area has been a pastoral area for centuries. Even today, during the summer, cattle are raised on katuns (like the Zagarački katun), so visitors have the opportunity to experience an authentic mountain lifestyle and try homemade cheese, cream cheese and prosciutto. 4. Outdoor activities Hiking and mountaineering: The terrain is varied - from easy walks in the meadows to more demanding climbs to Žurime or Stožac. Biking and jeep tours: Due to the branched network of macadam roads, Lukavica is a favorite among fans of mountain biking and off-road four-wheel drive (ATV/quad). 5. How to get there? From Nikšić, Lukavica (and Bar Bojović) can be reached by asphalt road through Župa Nikšićka or by the direction past the Ski Center Vučje and Gvozd. The road from Bar Bojović to the Captain's Lake itself makes it easy to access by car, although that part is best walked.
