Čakor is a mountain and a famous mountain pass in the east of Montenegro, located on the triple border of the historical regions of Vasojević, Metohija and the Rugovska gorge. 1. Geographical location
Where it is located: It is located between the municipalities of Plav and Andrijevica on the Montenegrin side and Peć on the other side. It represents the natural border that separates Prokletije from Mount Haile.
Čakor mountain pass: The most famous part of the mountain is the pass of the same name at an altitude of 1,849 meters above sea level, which makes it one of the highest road passes in the territory of the former Yugoslavia.
2. Historical and traffic significance
Čakor-Peć road: The road across Čakor was built in 1925 and was ceremonially opened by King Aleksandar Karađorđević. For decades, it was the main traffic artery connecting Podgorica, Murina and Andrijevica with Peć and Metohija.
Albanian Golgotha (1915): During the First World War, the Serbian army and refugees retreated through snow-covered Čakor in the direction of Shkodër and Albania in extremely difficult conditions.
Closed crossing: After the conflict in Kosovo in 1999, traffic over the pass itself was suspended, and the border crossing from Murina to Peć was closed to regular traffic.
3. Nature and tourism
High peaks: The highest peaks of Čakor exceed 2,000 meters above sea level (such as Starac at 2,352 m.a.s.l. and Djevojački Krs).
Landscape: Chakor is adorned with vast grassy pastures, dense coniferous forests, katuns and steep cliffs. From the pass there is an open view of the Prokletija massif and the Hajla mountain.
Mountaineering and cycling: Today, Chakor is extremely popular among hikers, mountain bikers and lovers of untouched nature. The famous international hiking trail Peaks of the Balkans passes through it.
