Kosanica is a spacious, picturesque and in many ways unique village (and plateau) in the municipality of Pljevlja, located on the road between Pljevlja and Đurđević Tara.
Here are the most important and interesting details about this place:
1. Montenegrin "polar range" (Village with the lowest measured temperature)
Kosanica is best known to the public for its extreme microclimatic conditions and specific relief in the form of a frost field (karst field).
On January 25, 2006, the lowest temperature in the history of Montenegro was officially measured in Kosanica: -39°C. That is why this village is often called "Montenegro's Siberia". Frost and salt in Kosanica can occur even in the middle of the summer months (July and August).
2. Geographical position and nature
The village is located on a high karst plateau, at an altitude of about 1,200 meters.
It is characterized by a spacious, flat field surrounded by dense coniferous forests (pine, spruce, fir) and hills. The main highway connecting Pljevlja with Žabljak and the canyons of Tara and Draga runs through Kosanica.
3. Tradition, agriculture and animal husbandry
Thanks to the spacious pastures and meadows, Kosanica has always been known for intensive animal husbandry (breeding of cattle and sheep) and farming (especially for the cultivation of high-quality seed and table potatoes).
Dairy products from this region (Pljeval cheese and cream) are highly valued because of the clean and untouched nature where cattle graze.
4. Diaspora and preservation of homeland
Like many villages in the north, during the second half of the 20th century, Kosanica suffered an outflow of population towards Pljevlje, Podgorica and Serbia.
However, the locals and natives are very attached to their area - there is a native association in the village, properties are being renovated, and the area is increasingly popular for excursion tourism and weekend vacations in nature.
